Biodiversity Week 2023

CEF hosted four events during Biodiversity Week in collaborations with other organisations and with financial support from the Irish Environmental Network. The theme threaded throughout was that of UN Biodiversity Day to #buildbackbiodiversity.

Nature Forum Reflections

The first event took place in Nano Nagle Place in partnership with the Nature Forum. Feedback on the work of the nature Forum was presented by Bernie Connolly, Cork Environmental Forum and Niamh Guiry, UCC Green Campus. Really inspiring and thoughtprovoking presentations were given by UCC PhD Researcher Topaz Shrestha on the topic of eco-psychology exploring the connection between human and environmental health, in respect of her research there is a focus on youth. We also met a new face from Cork City Council with a key role in supporting communities to conserve and restore biodiveristy, Usna Keating, the City’s recently recruited 2nd Biodiversity Officer. Usna presented on work he had done on the protection and conservation of a warbler in Poland and what his role will entail.

There was a brainstorming and planning session to help outline priority areas of local concern and how we can take action together. Attendees will be divided into groups and asked to participate in a number of facilitated discussions around key issues related to nature conservation and promotion. The event also provided an open space to facilitate sharing from and amongst local groups and people on what the work they have been doing, discussing and inspiring each other on how we can #buildbackbiodiversity in Cork City.
