Trees are a vital economic, environmental and social resource. They are amongst the most important features in our towns, villages and rural landscapes. For thousands of years, trees have been grown and cultivated for shelter, food, timber, medicine, and for their intrinsic beauty. They are integral to our cultural heritage and have been worshipped, celebrated and revered in Irish folklore.
So this week plant a tree in your garden, help with a community event, get out for a walk and really notice the trees as they embrace spring and learn more about the value and benefit of trees in our lives. There are lots of events happening throughout the county including a number in Macroom, Inchigeela, Clonakilty and Doneraile. Check out the National Tree Council website.
CEF will feature Trees again in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade which were created at a workshop at Blackrock Castle with primary schools in mahon in 2014.

Celebrate National Tree Week 2014
Tree Week is being celebrated this week with the theme The Sound of Trees. Regarding sound from trees some wooden musical instruments such as the Stradivarius violin have particularly good resonant qualities. Staying with the musical theme The Tree Council is marking this year with a special Orchestral and Choir concert at the Church of Ireland, Raneleagh on Saturday 8th March at 7.30pm.
The primary aim of National Tree Week is to encourage people to plant more trees and we encourage you to do this, with all the trees that have fallen or been damaged in recent storms we need more trees. Local authorities have supplies of native trees from Coillte for distribution.
CEF is running an event at Blackrock Castle today, Tuesday 4th, with children from the Holy Cross School in Mahon. Two workshops will provide information on our native trees and examine the benefits of trees. There will also be a creative element in making the 7 Nobles of the Wood.
Trees have lots of other benefits such as combating pollution –birch and plane trees are particularly good in this regard and also in stabilising river banks and absorbing excess water – see following links to some interesting articles and research:
- See article by George Monbiot on absorption rates of trees.
So this week plant a tree or take a walk in your local wood and listen to the sounds that trees make. Just outside official Tree Week but a lovely event is the walk on this Sunday 9th March at Glengarriff Nature Reserve organised by the Irish Wildlife Trust and guided by Claire Hardman of the NPWS.
