This course will cover some of the basics and look at the plants, insects, mammals and some of the aquatic species that live with us. This is a biodiversity week event which will explore the wildlife that inhabits our city steps and walls as well as those that use and live between the Quays in the river. Meet at the Firkin Crane for short presentations on birds, plants, insects and aquatic species. This will be followed by a stroll down the steps and along the North Mall Quay to see what we can find.
Fascinating Plants of the Gearagh Hedgerows

To celebrate National Biodiversity week join us for this leisurely walk along the Hedgerows of the Gearagh which will focus on the plants and flowers of the understorey. Ted Cook will lead this walk imparting some of his vast knowledge of the wonderful & varied plantlife that thrives in this beautiful area.

Last year, we hosted a guided walk of the Mardyke Trail with the Environmental Forum. Everyone shared their reflections on the day. We have put them all into a hand-made book and published a zine. The book will be revealed and there will be limited free copies of the zine on the day!
Important: The book was made with support from Cork Equal and Sustainable Communities Alliance (CESCA) & Irish Environmental Network (IEN). The zine is published with support from SICAP – Cork City Partnership.

The majority of this cycle will be off road and most of the rest on very quiet roads, it will be slow and easy so is particularly suited to those who are less confident cyclists
A Cycle out along the river to the Lee Fields, then along the Greenway behind CIT to Curraheen, though quite estate roads to the Greenway parallel to the N22 between the Bandon Road and Wilton, though quite estate roads and across the Cycle/Pedestrian bridge to Togher cross to join the Greenway Parallel to the N22 into the Tramore Valley Park for a picnic stop, leave the park via the Greenway Parallel to the N22 to Douglas Village, through the village to the Park on to the Green way to Donnybrook, back through Douglas village to the Green way behind Besskrook to Mahon Strand, past Blackrock Castle and alone the Marine back to the city.

We have costumes, face paint, huge bikes dancers etc. and we won the best group in 2018, 2016, and 2022......
We need people to dance, drum, perform, cycle bikes, hold banners, or just march. So if you would like to be part of the Parade let us know and we'll find a place for you.

Diverse Stories from Nature (Event for National Biodiversity Week)

The Mardyke Walk/Trail is one of nature's libraries in Cork.
Come on over - bring your friends, your smallies, your doggo.
Spend a Sunday afternoon gazing at trees, leaves, flowers, tiny creatures, lichen, birds and river animals.
Explore this short river side walk with Cork Environmental Forum.
As you enjoy this leafy path, stories will unfold..memories will emerge.
Good Day Cork will be present to capture your reflection.
Everyone is invited to share a multi-lingual reflection. These postcards will be displayed at a later event in the autumn time.
The walk/roll will end with light refreshments.
We will gather outside the Franciscan Well at 2:15pm & proceed to the trail together.

Bike week cycle to Cobh & Great Island
Grand Parade, Cork City
A cycle out to Great Island out the old railway greenway. Cross on the ferry before cycling around Great Island There will be a break for a picnic in Marlog before Cobh with panoramic views of Cork harbour and beginning the journey back to the city. For the return, you can choose to either cycle back on the old railway Via Passage and Blackrock or thanks to the generosity of Irish Rail take your bike back on the train for free.
This will be one of the longer, faster cycles of the week and involve busier roads and hills so will be particularly suited to more confident cyclists.
Note the cycle will depart at 12 but we'll have a bike doctor before at the fountain shortly after 11.

Biodiversity Basics Course

Are you interested to know more about the plants and animals that live in our neighbourhood and in the City? This course will cover some of the basics and look at the plants, insects, mammals and some of the aquatic species that live with us. We will explore what is nearby and discuss ways to help protect and look after the wildlife in our area.
