Fabulous fashion & lifestyle shows from Cork’s Reuse & Pre-loved Sector

Cork was the centre of style on Friday and Saturday when the fabulous clothing and homeware offerings from the vintage, charity and upcycling outlets were showcased at a ReLove Fashion Show at the Village Hall and a display at St. Peter’s Exhibition Centre to celebrate National Reuse Month and part of the Urban October programme.
Designers & retailers from Cork who showed off their style on Friday night included Barnardos, Miss Daisy Blue, Mercury Goes Retrograde, Oxfam, The Village Hall and Isobel Ru.
The event was held at The Village Hall, St. Patrick’s Quay and commenced with Music from Jon Hicks & Cornelia Keating and delicious canapés from  the House Café, at the Opera House. The effervescent Candy Warhol was the compere but the stars of the show were the wonderful models, all volunteers, and the beautifully stylish clothing. Hair Styling and Make-up were provided by Paula Curtis and her team at CHAIR, Artistry of Hair from the Market Parade which enhanced and complemented the fabulous looks.

On Saturday St. Peter’s Exhibition Centre hosted a lovely event with over 650 people passing through this lifestyle and homeware exhibition. Exhibitors included Deaf Enterprises, who offer a wonderful upholstery service, Back2New Community Upcycling,  Upcyling design initiative, Funky Junk Couture from Carrigaline, the work of students from the Furniture and Restoration course at St. Johns central College, Louise Harrington Patchwork, The Eclectic Attic & Le Table Belge.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr. Des Cahill and Cork City Council’s Director of Environment attended the event and met with all of the exhibitors to hear first-hand about their businesses and the wonderful work they are all doing in contributing to the economy and a better environment.

The event’s aim was to  encourage people to also shop at the reuse sector when looking to update furniture and home textiles deriving inspiration from the exhibition of upcycled and repurposed furniture and household goods available from these and other social enterprises, colleges and interior shops from Cork.
Both events were supported by Cork City Council, the Cork Environmental Forum and the Southern Region Waste Management Office.
National Reuse Month is a new waste prevention initiative to raise awareness about the economic and environmental benefits of reusing everyday items and materials that would otherwise go to waste.
By reusing items, we reduce the volume of waste being discarded while also conserving natural resources, energy and water. Reusing items also offers significant economic benefits by creating jobs and boosting the circular economy

October 2016 has been designated as National Reuse Month.
This national initiative involves the three Regional Waste Offices who are coordinating a nationwide series of events to run throughout the month.
The purpose of this new waste prevention initiative is to raise awareness about the economic and environmental benefits of reusing everyday items and materials that would otherwise go to waste. The campaign is designed to challenge our behaviours and reduce the amount of waste we create and throughout the month of October there will be local (and regional) workshops and events to promote ways for families, businesses and communities to reuse.

CEF, the Southern Waste Region, Cork City Council and Cork County Council are supporting some great events in Cork. Not least all the wonderful glamorous quirky and pre-loved fashion available at the Vintage, 2nd Hand and upcycling stores throughout the city. This will be showcased at a unique ReLove Fashion Show at the Village Hall on Friday 14th October featuring some of the stores (including Miss Daisy Blue, Oxfam, Barnardos, the Village Hall and others) with a wine and cheese reception, jazz, compere the vivacious Candy Warhol. Join us at this FREE upbeat event to start the weekend and help your sustainable lifestyle. 

Re-Use Lifestyle Event at St. Peter’s Exhibition Centre, Saturday 15th October 1pm -4pm

Another celebration of Re-Use Month this is a drop in event with ideas of how to style your home from Cork’s vintage, charity and upcycling sector. Information and advice available for interior design ideas that support the environment and local economy. 

The Baby Market at Rochestown Park Sunday 16th 12pm -2pm 

Packed full of pre-loved goods for babies, children and expectant mummies.  There will also be a selection of handmade items and services for mum & baby, and new (but discounted) items on sale. Also to celebrate ReUse Month there will be a childrens upcycling workshop with Louise Harrington.
